    Description

    Welcome!
I'm thrilled to present a sculptural masterpiece bracelet made by Sam Frank Patania and coming now from my personal collection. This is a hand constructed piece made in a very complex and difficult manner. There are several layers of work with the bottom layer heavy sheet, textured and darkened and scalloped to frame the discs on the outer level. There are three "outie" discs and two "innie" discs at the terminals. They are gorgeous and made of polished sterling silver with plaques of 18K yellow gold. The mixed metals always have great appeal to me, so it's not easy to part with this piece. Because of the dark texturing at the lower level and shiny strips between the discs, and the discs, raised, and made of shiny silver and gold, there are a lot of levels but they are integrated perfectly, creating an impression of simple beauty. The construction was complex and it is perfect.
This piece is from Sam Patania's Azteca Series. It is called Tecuhtli. He was impressed with the Aztec's ability to create a simple look from complicated construction and that is what influenced this work, which has an elegant simplicity on a complex foundation. To my mind great art has to be sculptural, in that you have to be able to view it from every angle and still find it beautiful. That is part of the appeal of this bracelet. My great aunt used to sew and said that garments should be finished on the inside as well as on the outside. She said you should be able to wear them inside out. It is this devotion to perfection that we see in this bracelet. It exemplifies the artistic integrity of a great master.
This masterpiece measures 5-3/8" on the internal length with an added gap of 1-1/8", so the total internal length is 6-1/2". The size cannot be adjusted. The width is 3/4" and the weight is a satisfying 59.9 grams. It is in excellent collectible condition. It is signed with Sam Patania's hallmark and with an illegible stamp for metal content. I guarantee it's sterling silver and 18K yellow gold. It's comfortable to wear, and even though it has a complex multi-level construction it has a low enough profile not to interfere with being worn by an active person.
Sam Patania is the grandson of Frank Patania Sr. and the son of Frank Patania Jr. who changed the face of southwest jewelry design forever in their Patania Shop by creating southwestern jewelry with an integrity of design that became recognized world wide. Their work resides in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Museum of Art as well as being represented in the best museums and galleries, world wide. This bracelet can stand up to the best of this family's work and is top museum quality.
I have an interview with him in my store as one of the "pages" where he discusses this bracelet. To read it click on the red door to enter the aaplover store, and scroll down toward the bottom of the left hand menu to the pages section. Select the Sam Patania page.
Note that the Patania work was often copied, but they almost always signed their work. This is an original signed piece and has considerable collectible value. It is a wonderful opportunity to own the kind of bracelet that I consider investment grade. It's stunning. I just adore it and I know you will, too. It's special.
