PSYCHO-PHONE PHONOGRAPH
This is an extremely rare Psycho-Phone, probably the only one you've ever seen and a testament to the entrepreneurial skills of Mr. Alois Benjamin Saliger, a Czech immigrant to the United States (and former salvage yard owner) who, at some point in the mid 1920's, decided that what the world needed more than anything else was an "Automatic Suggestion Machine," a device that would talk to you in your dreams, that would whisper positive thoughts to your subconscious while you slept, that would tell you what you needed to hear so that upon waking you'd realize that you actually were a better person than people said you were, that you were smarter, more attractive and more athletic, not to mention funnier and more creative.
As you can see, the apparatus was basically a hybrid of two other inventions, one of them ancient (a clock), the other relatively new (a phonograph).  Before going to bed, you'd set the clock to whatever time you were going to be in your most receptive cycle of sleep, and when the silent alarm tripped, it would trigger the phonograph to start playing a record on which were recorded the various subliminal messages that you needed to hear in order to become the person you always knew you could be but somehow weren't...yet.  The recorded instructions would emanate from a tiny horn mounted on the back side of the reproducer; they'd be loud enough to filter into your subconscious, but not so loud that they'd wake you. When the record ended, a second relay would turn the phonograph off.
Condition overall is excellent, as you can see in the photographs.  There are some chips in the rear flange of the pot metal reproducer, but the reproducer still mounts securely to the tonearm, and the tonearm itself is complete and undamaged, as is the rest of the reproducer, including the tiny horn.  The cabinet is still in very nice shape, with its original finish still intact and still smooth to the touch. The original colored decorations on the cabinet are still vibrant.  The motor is original, as is the governor and the rest of the gear train. Original turntable and turntable felt.  Original clock, and the arms still rotate when the movement is adjusted. The woven line cord is original, but it will need to be replaced or repaired if you wish to safely experiment with the device, as the cord is badly frayed where it slips into the motor housing. Accordingly, the apparatus is being offered for historical and/or display purposes only, with no assurances as to its viability as either a phonograph or a motivational/therapeutic tool. A copy of an original Psycho-Phone record "Prosperity" is also included.
