Each thermometer is mounted in a square-shaped shatter-proof plastic bottle filled with a liquid to insure accurate readings despite the opening and closing of instrument doors.  This safety coated thermometer is resilient to breakage.  If broken, the coat will contain the liquid and glass for ease of disposal.

The thermometers have engraved stems and are thoroughly annealed for lasting accuracy. Each thermometer has its own unique serial number and has been tested against a standard calibrated at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
The permanently fused markings are black on a white background. The blue filling liquid is easy to read on the white backed glass.
